Argentina’S Glacial Wonderland, Perito Moreno

A trip to the Perito Moreno Glacier some 80 km. from the town of El Calafate in the southern Patagonian Peninsula is an escape to a landscape of jagged blue and white ice and an adventure back in time.

El Calafate, the gateway to the magnificent world of glaciers and to the Los Glaciares National Park, housing the Perito Moreno Glacier, is a quaint Patagonian town on the shores of breathtaking Lake Argentino. Perched on a hillside surrounded by small farms and "estancias", a wealth of adventure activities are on offer here. In addition to glacial trips and boat excursions, the region features horseback riding, trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and fishing, as well as 4X4 safaris and unique family adventure programs to pampering estancias, combining nature, history and active travel. Nearby, the Waliche Caves, caverns filled with Paleolithic cave paintings embody one of Argentina's significant treasures.
Located several hours from El Calafate, The Perito Moreno Glacier presents superb ice climbing and trekking opportunities, boat excursions for up-close panoramas, and hiking with spectacular views from various balconies. The splendid 250 kilometer-square ice formation, 30 km in length, 5 km wide and 50m. in height from the water line, with 50-120 m under the surface, is one of the 48 glaciers fed by the Andean icecap. Sailing along Lake Argentino among crystalline icebergs, the views from the boat only serve to enhance the immensity of the glacier, towering above in its majestic glory. The bright cerulian ice stands out against the backdrop of black mountains, affording up-close views. Hiking around the area, various balconies, viewpoint platforms on the cliff's face opposite the glacier, feature awe-inspiring vistas of this natural wonder. The physical beauty, the heavy silence broken only by the sound of the ice cracking and crashing into the water and leaving its imprints is incredible.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is only one of several ice fields worldwide that has withstood the effects of global warming. Nourished by the Andean snow melt, it maintains its equilibrium while it continues to grow even as it spawns huge icebergs into to the lake. A very different experience is trekking on the glacier itself. Fitted with crampons, experience the force of the Perito Moreno up-close as turquoise pools of water, crevasses and brilliant colors scattered among the towers of ice provide an entirely new perspective of this amazing glacier.
The glacier wonderland of the Los Glacieres National Park, highlighted by the Perito Moreno Glacier, is an incredible introduction to the many areas of interest in the vast, barren and windswept region of Patagonia - and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
